Mystery lampeyes: anyone know them?

Postby tyronegenade » Fri Mar 02, 2012 12:42 pm

Hi all,

I got a group of lampeyes from an importer a few weeks back. At first I thought they were normanii or something similar but they are clearly not. They are about 4-5 cm long. Very nice fish. No spawning yet but I'm hoping to see eggs soon.

Does anyone know what they are?

Hmmm, interesting. Do you know if they were wild caught?

Oh, they were definitely wild-caught! My friend is a co-owner in the Nigerian outfit that did the exporting but getting info from the collectors has been trying...

Best guess is that is is Poropanchax luxophthalmus hannerzi (thanks to Jouke v. d. Zee on the Facebook Killifish page). Now some advice on breeding would be much appreciated. The tricks I used to Lacustricola katangae are not working this time round.

Looks like a close match, albeit slightly less blue in yours (though this could be the light) and yours seem more elongate. Here's the photo from Tim's site (photo by Ed Purzl):

Hope he doesn't mind me showing the photo :? :?:

For breeding, have you tried your tea trick? Peat? Almond leaves? Cooler temperature?

Well done. I'm sure more will follow. Tea does it again, eh?!

I'm not sure if it is the tea or the good food, the new tank with fresh water or what but I'm getting 2-4 eggs per day now and not a single egg is sterile.

Correction: 8 eggs per day. I collected 4 eggs this morning and another 6 eggs just now. I say 8 eggs per day because I never collected eggs yesterday. This also means they eat their eggs  There are only 2 females in the tank (best I can guess).

Feeding: frozen blood worm, live grindal worms, brine shrimp nauplii, Black Gold fry food and either Frozen Moina or Cyclops. Not all at once. The BSS, frozen bloodworm and cyclops/moina is fed in the morning and the Black Gold and grindals in the afternoon.

I just put 6 eggs on peat. If they incubate well on peat then I can see about sending some eggs out to interested parties.

Hello,

Who wants to partake in an experiment? I want to send some eggs (a dozen or however many I can gather over 2-3 days) to the UK or Europe as a test to see if they can survive shipping. Anyone interested? Please PM me.

Shouldn't you try and grow some on yourself first?!

I have about 30 eggs incubating already which is more fry that I can hope to raise for my own purposes. I'm eager to share the fish while I have them breeding. The males are very colorful with bright yellow and red in the fins.

Hooray! I got fry. Incubation is about 8 days in water. I put some egg son peat on Tuesday and Wednesday to incubate and see if this slows things done. It doesn't. The eggs are nearly eyed-up. The incubation period is far to short for international post so so much for sharing. You will just have to bug your local importer to get some. I will ask my friend what the export company is called...

Now to see about raising the fry. Thankfully one of my tanks has gone grass green...
